Laura Churchill always had a smile on her face, and you know what; she still does. Laura attended Beaumont High School and started college at the University of Dayton. However, something kept pulling her back home, and during that first year she decided to return to Cleveland Heights and forego the college scene for a while. How long is a while? About 28 years. Eventually, Laura realized that although she had achieved a great deal of professional success, to continue to advance in her career field it would be to her advantage to possess the credentials that a degree would afford her. So she hit the books for three solid years at the University of Phoenix and received her Bachelor's Degree in Health Care Administration in 2011. And she hasn't stopped there; once Laura hit her stride she continued her studies and is on pace to receive her Master's Degree in the spring of 2016.
Laura entered the health care profession at the age of 25 and spent the next seventeen years managing the practice of roughly a dozen physicians at University Suburban Health Center in South Euclid. It was a job she loved, and it provided her with a tremendous foundation in the health care field. In 2004 she made the difficult decision to leave the practice and accepted a position in the Business Development Office at University Hospitals. This position would allow her to expand her expertise and focused heavily on identifying and solving problems, and instituting policies to improve procedures.
In 2011 she left UH for the Cleveland Clinic where she is currently the Director of Provider Engagement. Her role there is to compare clinical data of independently employed physicians against known quality measures and standards, and make determinations on how best to improve patient care. It's part researcher, part statistician, part analyst, and for you sports fans, part Sabermetrics.
Laura married her high school prom date in 1985 and remained married until 2005. They set up house in Chesterland and raised two beautiful daughters, who are all grown up now and starting their own lives. Her oldest, Mary who is 28, and a licensed social worker at Metro Health's Cancer Center, was married back in November of 2014. Her younger daughter Madeline, 26, is a fashion designer for White House Black Market in Fort Myers Florida. Since 2004, Laura has resided in Shaker Heights, Ohio.
Besides work, there are several things Laura enjoys doing in her free time. Whether it's reading, or listening to music, or going out to dinner and a movie, or just spending time with friends, Laura is sure to be active doing something. She also enjoys biking and working in the yard, and she knows her way around the kitchen, and loves cooking while sipping on a good glass of wine or a microÂbrew. She also has recently found a desire to try things new. Last summer, out of the blue, she joined a rowing team. And, this past May she hauled herself off to a dude ranch. What gives?
Laura also has had the joy of traveling and has visited Napa Valley, Seattle, Vancouver, Grand Cayman, and France. However, the most meaningful trip Laura has ever made was one that took place last fall when she went on a mission trip with St. Dominic's parish to El Salvador. It was a life changing event that made Laura realize just how fortunate she is. The people of the 12 villages that Laura visited were all very poor, and all lived in what could only be referred to as shacks. Laura is currently sponsoring a young woman in that country who is getting her nursing degree.
Laura has every intention of going back to El Salvador again this November, and after that, she plans to make a trip to Ireland with a group of her high school friends. I'm pretty sure that when she lands in Dublin next year, her Irish eyes will surely be smiling.
